About Raigad
Raigad is a district in the state of Maharashtra, India. Formerly called the Kolaba district, the district was renamed after Raigad, the fort that was the former capital of the Maratha leader Shivaji Maharaj, and is located in the interior regions of the district, in dense forests on a west-facing spur of the Western Ghats of Sahyadri range. It includes the large natural harbor of Pen-Mandwa, which is immediately south of Mumbai harbor, and forming a single landform with it. The northern part of the district is included in the planned metropolis of Navi Mumbai, and its port, the Jawaharlal Nehru Port.

Raigad Fort
Raigad Fort was built by Raje Chandraraoji More of Jawli later Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj seized the fort and made it his capital in 1674 when he was crowned as the King of the Maratha Kingdom which later developed into the Maratha Empire.
Karnala Bird Sanctuary
Karnala Bird Sanctuary is located in Panvel Taluka of Raigad District, outside Mumbai, India near Matheran and Karjat.
Ballaleshwar Ganpati
Ballaleshwar temple is the only temple of Ganesh, famous by the name of his devotee and who is dressed up like a Brahmin. The temple is located in the town of Pali, off the Mumbai-Pune highway, about 11 km before Nagothane on the Mumbai-Goa highway.
Harihareshwar Beach
Harihareshwar alone has two beaches one is a straight beach about 2.4 km long in front of Harihareshwar Temple, and the other beach is about 2 km in an L shape just in front of MTDC Resort. Harihareshwar is an evergreen place and one may visit it in any season.
Jijamata Palace
Jijamata Palace at Pachad holds a significant place in the history of the Maratha kingdom. Jijabai, the mother of Shivaji is credited for the greatness of Shivaji. The Jijamata palace is the place where Jijabai, a lady of high values lived till her death.
Queen’s Palace
Queen’s Palace also known as ‘Rani Vasa’ is another significant part of the Raigad fort, situated between Gangasagar and Kushwatra Talaos. The portion of the Queen’s Palace comprises six chambers with each having its own private commode and bathing facilities.
Best Time To Visit Raigad
Summer months from March to July are not a suitable time to visit Raigad as temperatures can soar up unbelievably high that is up to 49°C. The weather is quite humid and should be avoided. Monsoon is not the correct time to visit the city, as Raigad is famous for its heavy rain. Winters are the optimal time to visit Raigad, the months of November to March are the ideal time to make a visit.
