About Lachen

Lachen is a town in the North Sikkim district in the Indian state of Sikkim. It is located at an elevation of 2,750 meters. The name Lachen means "big pass". The town is being promoted as a tourist destination by the Sikkimese government. The town forms the base of the Chopta Valley and Gurudongmar Lake. An annual yak race, the Thangu is held here in summer.

Best Time To Visit Lachen

The best time to visit Lachen is during the beginning of summer and winter season as the weather remains pleasant and comfortable which is ideal for sightseeing. The summer season in Lachen begins with the month of March and ends with June.  The weather remains pleasant during this season, which is perfect for sightseeing. During this season, the temperature ranges between 10°C to 28°C. Lachen experiences heavy rainfall during the monsoon season. It is best to avoid this season for a visit. The Winter season in Lachen starts with the month of October and ends in the month of February. During this season, the temperature ranges between -5°C to 15°C. At times, the temperature drops down close to the freezing point.
