Bulawayo is known for its wide, tree-lined streets and relaxed pace compared to Harare. The northern and western suburbs are the safest and most comfortable for international visitors.

• Suburbs & Burnside: Quiet, residential areas with excellent guesthouses, secure hotels, and proximity to major shopping centers.
• Hillside & Kumalo: Upscale neighborhoods featuring some of the city's best restaurants and the popular Centenary Park.
• Environment: Very leafy, clean, and generally considered safer and more laid-back than the capital.

While violent crime against tourists is rare, petty theft can occur in crowded areas.

• Central Business District (CBD): Bustling during the day with markets and shops, but can feel intimidating and less secure after business hours (5:00 PM). Avoid walking here at night.
• Entumbane & Mpopoma: High-density residential townships. While culturally rich, they are not typical tourist areas and should only be visited with a trusted local guide.
• General Rule: Keep valuables out of sight, do not walk alone at night, and always use registered taxis or app-based rides.

Located just 35 km south of the city, this UNESCO World Heritage site is a must-visit. The landscape features massive, balancing granite boulders and ancient San rock art.

• Rhino Tracking: Matobo is one of the best places in Africa for guided walking safaris to track both black and white rhinos on foot.
• World's View: The spot where Cecil John Rhodes is buried, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the balancing rocks.

For a cultural deep-dive without leaving the city limits, Bulawayo offers exceptional institutions.

• Natural History Museum: The largest and most comprehensive museum in Zimbabwe. Features an incredible collection of African wildlife dioramas, geology, and human history.
• Chipangali Wildlife Orphanage: A sanctuary for injured and orphaned wild animals, including rhinos, elephants, and wild dogs. A highly rewarding visit for animal lovers.
• Mzilikazi Art Gallery: Showcases contemporary Zimbabwean art and traditional crafts.

Bulawayo has a growing culinary scene, particularly in the suburban areas.

• Local Cuisine: Try traditional Ndebele dishes. While Sadza is common everywhere, the Matabeleland region is known for its unique preparation of sour milk (amasi) and hearty meat stews.
• Upscale Dining: Restaurants in the Hillside and Suburbs areas offer excellent steaks, international cuisine, and vegetarian options. Always inform your restaurant of strict dietary requirements in advance.
• Cafes: The city has a strong cafe culture, perfect for a morning coffee and light breakfast before heading to Matobo.

For everyday essentials, Bulawayo is well-equipped with major retail chains.

• City Square & Ascot Shopping Centre: The main retail hubs featuring supermarkets (Pick n Pay, OK Zimbabwe), pharmacies, and clothing stores.
• Currency: As with the rest of Zimbabwe, carry crisp, new USD cash. Cards are accepted in major supermarkets and restaurants, but cash is king for smaller vendors.
• Cultural Crafts: While Victoria Falls is the main curio hub, you can find authentic Ndebele beadwork and woven baskets at local markets and the Mzilikazi Art Gallery.
