Stretching roughly 300 kilometers from Mossel Bay in the Western Cape to Storms River in the Eastern Cape, the Garden Route is South Africa's premier road trip. • Valid License: Your original Indian Driving License must be valid and in English.
• International Driving Permit (IDP): Highly recommended and often legally required by rental agencies and traffic authorities. Obtain this in India before departure through your local Regional Transport Office (RTO) or authorized agents like the Automobile Association of India (AAI).
• Passport: Required for identity verification.
• Credit Card: A major credit card in the primary driver's name is mandatory for the security deposit hold.
• Age Requirement: Most agencies require drivers to be at least 21 years old, with a young driver surcharge for those under 25.

• Compact Car (e.g., VW Polo): ZAR 400 – 600 per day (₹1,800 – ₹2,700)

• Speed Limits: 120 km/h on national highways (N2), 100 km/h on rural roads, and 60 km/h in urban areas. Speed cameras are strictly enforced.
• Toll Gates: There are a few toll plazas on the N2 (e.g., Touwsrivier). Payment is accepted in ZAR cash or via major credit cards.
• Seat Belts: Mandatory for all passengers, including those in the rear seats.
• Mobile Phones: Using a handheld mobile phone while driving is strictly prohibited. Use a hands-free mount.
• Wildlife Crossings: Be vigilant for monkeys, baboons, and occasionally antelope crossing the road, especially near forested areas and Tsitsikamma.

• Daylight Driving Only: Plan your travel to arrive at your destination before sunset. Driving at night on rural roads increases the risk of wildlife collisions and reduces visibility of road hazards.
• Secure Your Vehicle: Always lock the doors while driving. When parking, ensure no bags, electronics, or valuables are visible on the seats. Use secure, attended parking lots whenever possible.
• Loadshedding Awareness: South Africa experiences scheduled power cuts. While the N2 highway is unaffected, traffic lights in towns may be out. Treat non-functional traffic lights as 4-way stops. Confirm your accommodation has a backup generator.
