Kigali International Airport (KGL) Guide

Kigali International Airport (KGL) is small but highly efficient. Most Indian travelers arrive here via connecting flights on Ethiopian Airlines (via Addis Ababa) or Kenya Airways (via Nairobi). The airport is renowned for its cleanliness, friendly staff, and straightforward layout, making the arrival process stress-free. 1. Disembark & Follow Signs: Follow the "Arrivals" and "Immigration" signs. The walk from the gate is short.
2. Locate the VoA Counter: Look for the dedicated "Visa on Arrival" or "Visas" desk before the main immigration booths.
3. Present Documents: Hand over your Indian passport, return flight ticket, and hotel booking confirmation.
4. Pay the Fee: Pay USD 50 in cash. Exact change is highly recommended, as card facilities may occasionally be unavailable.
5. Biometrics & Stamping: Proceed to the main immigration booth for fingerprinting and passport stamping. The entire process typically takes under 15 minutes.

Rwanda has a strict, nationwide ban on single-use plastic bags to protect its environment. Customs officers may inspect your luggage at the baggage claim area or upon exiting the terminal.

• What happens: Any single-use plastic shopping bags will be confiscated.
• The solution: Pack your souvenirs and belongings in cloth bags, reusable tote bags, or your suitcase. Many hotels provide reusable bags for guests.
• Tip: Do not pack duty-free items in plastic bags at your departure airport; request paper or reusable bags instead.

• Currency Exchange: Forex bureaus are available in the arrivals hall. It is advisable to exchange a small amount of USD to Rwandan Francs (RWF) for immediate tips or transport, though USD is widely accepted for tours.
• SIM Cards: MTN Rwanda and Airtel Rwanda have kiosks in the arrivals area. You can purchase a tourist SIM card and load data immediately. Bring your passport for registration.
• ATMs: Multiple ATMs (Visa/Mastercard compatible) are located in the arrivals and departures halls.
• Wi-Fi: Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminal, though purchasing a local SIM is more reliable for navigating the city.

• Pre-arranged Transfers: The most seamless option. Your hotel or tour operator will have a driver holding a name board in the arrivals hall.
• Ride-Hailing Apps: Yego Moto, Move, and Uber operate at KGL. Designated pickup zones are clearly marked. A ride to central Kigali costs approximately RWF 5,000–8,000.
• Airport Taxis: Official, metered airport taxis are available outside the terminal. They are safe and reliable, though slightly more expensive than app-based rides.

If you are transiting through KGL on a single ticket (e.g., Ethiopian Airlines or RwandAir), your luggage will typically be checked through to your final destination.

• No Visa Needed: If you remain in the international transit area, no Rwandan visa is required.
• Transit Lounge: A small but comfortable transit lounge is available with basic seating, restrooms, and a café.
