Tanzania Safari Luggage Rules
Understanding baggage restrictions is critical for domestic flights between the Serengeti and Zanzibar.

CRITICAL RULE: Domestic charter flights (Coastal Aviation, Auric Air, Airkenya) have a strict 15 kg (33 lbs) weight limit per passenger. Luggage MUST be a soft-sided, collapsible duffel bag. Hard-shell suitcases will be rejected at the airstrip and left behind at your own expense.

What to Pack In

  • Primary Bag: 60L–80L soft-sided safari duffel bag (with lockable zippers).
  • Day Bag: Small backpack or cross-body bag for daily game drives (camera, water, sunscreen).
  • Storage: Most lodges provide a locked storage box or bag for items you don't need on the safari (e.g., your large hard suitcase left in Arusha).

International Flight Strategy

Fly into Tanzania with your hard-shell suitcase containing your international travel gear. Upon arrival in Arusha, transfer your safari essentials into a soft duffel bag (provided by most tour operators like Destination To Plan). Leave the hard suitcase securely stored at your Arusha hotel or the tour operator's office while you are on safari.

Safari Clothing: What to Wear
Layering is essential. Mornings are cold, afternoons are hot, and dust is a constant factor.

Color Rules

  • DO WEAR: Khaki, olive green, beige, brown, and muted earth tones. These blend into the environment and show less dust.
  • DO NOT WEAR: Bright colors (white, red, yellow) as they distract wildlife. Avoid black and dark blue, as they strongly attract tsetse flies in certain regions (like Tarangire).
  • Camouflage: Strictly prohibited for civilians in Tanzania. Do not pack military-style camo clothing.

Layering Essentials

  • Base Layer: 2-3 lightweight, moisture-wicking t-shirts (long and short sleeve).
  • Mid Layer: 1-2 fleece jackets or light sweaters for chilly 6:00 AM game drives.
  • Outer Layer: 1 lightweight, windproof/waterproof jacket (Ngorongoro Crater rim can be very cold and windy).
  • Bottoms: 2 pairs of convertible hiking pants or lightweight trousers. Avoid shorts on game drives (protection from sun, dust, and insects).
Footwear & Accessories
Comfort and protection are more important than fashion on a safari.

Footwear

  • Game Drives: Comfortable, closed-toe walking shoes or trail runners. You will be sitting mostly, but may walk at lodges or rest stops.
  • Lodge/Zanzibar: Sturdy sandals or flip-flops for relaxing in the evenings.
  • Avoid: Brand new, unbroken-in hiking boots (blister risk) or open-toe shoes during game drives (dust and thorns).

Accessories

  • Hat: Wide-brimmed hat with a chin strap (open-top safari vehicles get windy).
  • Sunglasses: Polarized sunglasses to reduce glare on the savanna.
  • Scarf/Bandana: Highly recommended to cover your nose and mouth on dusty roads.
  • Daypack: Small, secure backpack for your camera, water bottle, and sunscreen inside the 4x4.
Health, Medications & Toiletries
Proactive health preparation is vital for a comfortable East African journey.

Medications

  • Malaria Prophylaxis: Consult your doctor in India before travel. Malarone or Doxycycline are commonly prescribed. Start taking them before arrival as directed.
  • Basic First Aid: Antihistamines, anti-diarrheal (Imodium), motion sickness tablets, pain relievers (Paracetamol/Ibuprofen), and rehydration salts (ORS).
  • Prescriptions: Carry all personal medications in their original packaging with a copy of the prescription.

Toiletries

  • Insect Repellent: High-DEET (30%+) repellent for evenings at the lodge.
  • Sun Protection: High-SPF (50+) sunscreen and SPF lip balm. The equatorial sun is intense.
  • Hygiene: Hand sanitizer, wet wipes, and your own toilet paper (bush toilets on mobile safaris may not be stocked).
  • Biodegradable Soap: Required if staying at eco-camps with outdoor showers.
Electronics & Gadgets
Capture the Great Migration without running out of power or violating park rules.

STRICT WARNING: Drones are strictly prohibited by the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA). They will be confiscated at park entry gates without exception.

Power & Adapters

  • Plug Type: Tanzania uses Type G (British 3-pin rectangular) outlets at 230V/50Hz.
  • Adapter: Indian Type D (3-pin round) plugs will NOT work. Bring a universal travel adapter.
  • Power Banks: Essential. Lodge power may be limited to evening hours in remote eco-camps.
  • Car Charging: Most modern 4x4 safari vehicles have 12V cigarette lighter sockets or USB ports for charging during game drives.

Photography Gear

  • Camera: DSLR or mirrorless with a zoom lens (e.g., 70-200mm or 100-400mm) for wildlife.
  • Storage: Multiple high-capacity SD cards and a portable hard drive for backups.
  • Binoculars: 8x42 or 10x42 binoculars are highly recommended for spotting distant wildlife (can often be rented from your tour operator).
  • Dust Protection: A simple plastic zip-lock bag to protect your camera from fine safari dust.
Zanzibar Add-on Packing
If your Tanzania itinerary includes Zanzibar, add these items to your duffel bag.

Beach & Casual

  • Lightweight, breathable cotton or linen shirts and shorts.
  • Swimwear (2 sets, as humidity slows drying).
  • Rash guard for snorkeling or diving (protects from sun and coral).
  • Reef-safe sunscreen to protect the Indian Ocean marine ecosystem.

Cultural Respect (Stone Town)

  • Zanzibar is a predominantly Muslim region. When exploring Stone Town or local villages, pack modest clothing.
  • Shoulders and knees must be covered for both men and women.
  • A lightweight scarf or sarong is perfect for draping over swimwear or sleeveless tops when leaving the beach.
Tanzania Packing FAQ for Indian Travelers
Quick answers to the most common packing and luggage questions
1Can I bring a hard-shell suitcase on a Tanzania safari?
No. Domestic flights within Tanzania (e.g., Serengeti to Zanzibar) have a strict 15kg weight limit and require soft-sided duffel bags. Hard suitcases will not fit in small aircraft cargo holds and will be left behind at your own risk.
2What colors should I wear on a Tanzania safari?
Wear neutral, earthy tones like khaki, olive, beige, and brown. Avoid bright colors (white, red, yellow) as they distract wildlife, and avoid black or dark blue, which attract tsetse flies in certain regions.
3Is laundry service available in Tanzania safari lodges?
Yes, most mid-range and luxury safari lodges and tented camps offer complimentary or low-cost laundry service. This allows you to pack lighter and re-wear neutral-colored clothing.
4Do I need a plug adapter for Tanzania?
Yes. Tanzania uses Type G (British 3-pin rectangular) electrical outlets at 230V. Indian Type D (3-pin round) plugs will not work without a universal travel adapter.
5Can I bring a drone on a Tanzania safari?
No. The Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) strictly prohibits the use of drones in all national parks and conservation areas. Drones will be confiscated at park entry gates.
6What medications should Indian travelers pack for Tanzania?
Consult your doctor for malaria prophylaxis (e.g., Malarone or Doxycycline). Also pack basic medications for motion sickness, stomach upset, allergies, a reusable water bottle purification method, and high-DEET insect repellent.
7What should I pack for Zanzibar after the safari?
Pack light, breathable cotton or linen clothing, swimwear, a sarong, and flip-flops. For Stone Town, bring modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees out of respect for local Islamic culture.
