7-Day Bolivia Itinerary for First-Time Indian Travelers
A practical, altitude-conscious route covering La Paz, Uyuni Salt Flats & Lake Titicaca.

Key Principle: Always spend 2 full days in La Paz (3,640m) before ascending to Uyuni (3,656m) to reduce altitude sickness risk.

Day 1: Arrive in La Paz — Rest & Light Acclimatisation

Land at El Alto Airport (4,061m). Transfer to hotel in central La Paz. Rest, hydrate, avoid alcohol. Light walk around Plaza Murillo if feeling well.

Day 2: La Paz City Tour — Cable Cars & Witches Market

Ride Mi Teleférico (world's highest urban cable car) for panoramic views. Explore Mercado de las Brujas. Visit Valle de la Luna. Dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 3: Tiwanaku Ruins or Free Day

Optional day trip to Tiwanaku archaeological site (UNESCO). Or rest, shop for alpaca souvenirs, prepare for Uyuni tour. Overnight bus to Uyuni departs evening.

Day 4: Arrive Uyuni — Start 3-Day Salt Flat Expedition

Arrive Uyuni early morning. Meet 4WD tour group. Visit Train Cemetery, enter Salar de Uyuni. Lunch on salt crust. Sunset photography. Overnight in basic refugio or salt hotel.

Day 5: Laguna Colorada, Geysers & Flamingos

Full-day exploration of Eduardo Avaroa Reserve: red Laguna Colorada, Sol de Mañana geysers, Andean flamingos. Cold nights (-10°C possible). Pack thermals.

Day 6: Return from Uyuni — Transfer to Copacabana

Complete Uyuni tour, return to Uyuni town. Bus or flight back to La Paz, then transfer to Copacabana on Lake Titicaca. Relax by the lake.

Day 7: Lake Titicaca Boat Tour — Depart

Morning boat to Isla del Sol (Inca birthplace). Explore pre-Columbian ruins, Aymara villages. Return to Copacabana. Transfer to La Paz airport for departure.

10-Day Bolivia Itinerary — Add Sucre & Potosí
Extend your trip to include Bolivia's constitutional capital and historic silver mining city.

Days 1-7: Follow the 7-day itinerary above.

Day 8: Travel La Paz → Sucre (flight via Santa Cruz or overnight bus). Explore white-washed colonial architecture, UNESCO-listed historic center.

Day 9: Day trip to Potosí (4,090m) — visit Cerro Rico silver mine (optional, physically demanding), Casa de la Moneda museum. Return to Sucre.

Day 10: Morning in Sucre — visit textile museums, local markets. Fly or bus back to La Paz for international departure.

Note: Sucre sits at 2,810m — lower altitude than La Paz/Uyuni, making it a gentle transition before departure.

14-Day Bolivia Itinerary — Amazon Extension
For adventure travelers: add Rurrenabaque and Madidi National Park to your Andean journey.

Days 1-7: Standard La Paz → Uyuni → Titicaca route.

Day 8: Fly La Paz → Rurrenabaque (1 hour). Transfer to eco-lodge in Madidi National Park (Amazon basin).

Days 9-11: Guided jungle excursions: wildlife spotting (pink river dolphins, monkeys, macaws), canopy walks, indigenous community visits, night safaris.

Day 12: Return to Rurrenabaque, fly back to La Paz.

Days 13-14: Buffer days in La Paz for shopping, cultural experiences, or rest before international departure.

Tip: Madidi is one of the world's most biodiverse protected areas. Pack insect repellent, lightweight long sleeves, and rain gear.

Transport & Booking Tips for Indian Travelers
Practical advice for navigating Bolivia's transport network safely and efficiently.

Domestic Flights vs Buses

  • La Paz → Uyuni: Flight: 1 hour, ~₹8,000–₹12,000. Bus: 10–12 hours, ~₹1,500–₹2,500. Bus is budget-friendly; flight saves time.
  • La Paz → Sucre: Flight via Santa Cruz: 2.5 hours total. Bus: 12+ hours, mountainous route.
  • La Paz → Rurrenabaque: Flight only (1 hour); road access requires 16+ hours and is not recommended for tourists.
  • Booking tip: Use LATAM, Amaszonas, or Boliviana de Aviación websites. Book flights 4–6 weeks ahead for dry season.

Uyuni Tour Booking Checklist

  • ✓ Book in La Paz, not at Uyuni airport (more operator options, better rates)
  • ✓ Verify operator license (SERNATUR registration) and 4WD vehicle condition
  • ✓ Confirm accommodation type: salt hotel vs basic refugio (affects comfort at -10°C)
  • ✓ Request vegetarian/Indian-friendly meals when booking (many tours are meat-heavy)
  • ✓ Carry USD cash for tour payment (best rates; cards rarely accepted)
  • ✓ Get written confirmation with itinerary, inclusions, and emergency contacts
