💡 Pro Tip — You Can Apply at ANY Centre

You are free to book an appointment at any VFS centre across India regardless of your home city. If Delhi slots are full, try Jaipur or Chandigarh. The final decision on your application is made by the French Consulate with jurisdiction over your state of residence — not by the VFS centre where you apply.

What to Bring to Your VFS Appointment
Arrive prepared — a checklist of essentials and items to leave behind
📄
Appointment Confirmation Letter

Print your VFS appointment confirmation email. The letter contains a QR code / barcode that is scanned at entry. Without this, you will not be allowed inside.

🛂
Original Passport + Old Passports

Carry your current valid passport. If you have previous passports with old Schengen or foreign visas, bring those along — they demonstrate your travel history to the officer.

🖨️
Printed Application Form

The application form downloaded from the France-Visas portal must be printed and signed by hand. Do not submit a digital copy — a physical printout with the barcode is mandatory.

📸
Passport-Size Photographs

Carry at least 2 recent passport-size photographs (35×45mm, white background, matte finish). If you are unsure of compliance, VFS offers a photograph service at ₹200 for 4 photos.

📁
Complete Document Set in a Clear File

Arrange your documents in a clear plastic file or folder in submission order. Bring originals plus one photocopy set of each document. Do not carry documents in a bag or loose.

💳
Payment Method for Visa Fee

Carry your debit card, credit card, or sufficient cash (INR) to pay the visa processing fee at the counter. UPI is also accepted at most centres. The exact INR amount depends on the day's exchange rate.

🚫 Items NOT Permitted Inside the VFS Centre
  • Mobile phones or smartphones
  • Tablets or laptops
  • Lighters or matchsticks
  • MP3 players or earphones
  • Cameras or video cameras
  • Handbags (only clear files allowed)
  • Sharp objects (scissors, knives)
  • Food items or beverages

💡 The VFS centre does not have a cloakroom or storage facility for prohibited items. Plan accordingly — leave them in your vehicle or with a companion waiting outside.

Application Process — Step by Step
Follow these steps to complete your France visa application
1

Create Account on France-Visas Portal Online

Visit the official france-visas.gouv.fr portal and register with a valid email address. Create your applicant profile with personal details including full name, date of birth, nationality, and passport number. You will receive a confirmation email to activate your account.

2

Fill the Online Application Form Online

Complete the Schengen visa application form online with accurate details — travel dates, purpose of visit, accommodation details, and financial information. Double-check all entries as corrections after submission are difficult. Once completed, download and print the form with the generated barcode.

3

Book Appointment at VFS Global VAC

Schedule your visa appointment through the VFS Global website at any centre of your choice across India. Book at least 2–3 weeks in advance during peak season (March–July, September–December). Select your preferred date, time slot, and optional services. Pay the VFS service fee online at this stage.

4

Gather & Organise Documents Preparation

Collect all required documents as per the checklist above. Arrange in this order: Application form → Cover letter → Passport → Photos → Flight tickets → Hotel booking → Travel insurance → Bank statement → ITR → Salary slips → NOC. Carry original + 1 photocopy set. Ensure all documents are in English or French.

5

Attend Appointment & Submit Application In-Person

Arrive at the VFS Global centre 15 minutes before your scheduled time. Carry your appointment confirmation, original passport, and all documents. Biometric enrollment (fingerprints + photograph) is mandatory for applicants aged 12 and above. Pay the visa fee at the centre in INR via debit card, credit card, UPI, or cash.

6

Track Application Status Tracking

Use the reference number from your acknowledgement receipt to track your application status on the VFS Global website. You will receive SMS and email notifications at each stage — submission, processing, decision, and passport dispatch. Standard processing takes 3–15 working days.

7

Receive Passport & Verify Visa Collection

Collect your passport from the VFS centre or receive it via courier (based on your selection). Verify the visa sticker carefully: check your name, passport number, validity dates, number of entries, and territory. Report any discrepancies to the embassy immediately. If approved, you're ready to travel!

What Happens at the VFS Centre?
Know exactly what to expect from entry to exit — no surprises on appointment day
1

Security Check at Entry

On arrival, all applicants pass through a mandatory security screening. Only visa applicants are allowed inside — companions, friends, and relatives must wait outside unless you are a minor (under 18) requiring a parent/guardian, or a differently-abled applicant requiring assistance. Keep electronic devices and prohibited items outside.

2

Token / Queue Number Issuance

After security, you receive a token number corresponding to your appointment slot. You will be called by your token number to proceed to the submission counter. Keep your appointment confirmation letter and complete document set ready at this point.

3

Document Verification at Counter

The VFS staff will review your complete document set — application form, passport, photographs, supporting documents, and financial proofs. They check for completeness, not accuracy (that is the Consulate's role). If documents are missing, you may reschedule without fee loss, or submit an incomplete set by signing an acknowledgement form.

4

Biometric Data Collection

All applicants aged 12 and above must provide biometric data — all ten fingerprints and a live photograph taken in the biometric booth. This process takes approximately 5–10 minutes. If you had biometrics collected within the last 59 months for a Schengen visa, you may be exempt — check with the counter staff. Biometrics cannot be submitted on behalf of another person.

5

Fee Payment

Visa processing fees are collected at the centre in Indian Rupees (INR) at the exchange rate set by the French authorities. Accepted payment methods include debit card, credit card, UPI, and cash. The VFS service fee must be paid online when booking your appointment. Fees are non-refundable even in case of visa refusal.

6

Acknowledgement & Passport Collection Choice

After successful submission, you receive a reference number / acknowledgement slip. You will be asked to choose how you want your passport returned — in-person collection from the VFS centre, or via courier to your registered address. Courier is the more convenient option for most applicants outside the centre's city.

⏱ How Long Will You Be Inside?

Most applicants complete the entire process in 60 to 120 minutes. Morning slots (9 AM – 11 AM) tend to be busier with longer wait times. Afternoon slots (2 PM onwards) are generally quicker. If you have opted for the Premium Lounge, you will be attended to in a private setting with reduced wait time.

France Visa Rejection Reasons & How to Improve Approval Chances
Know why applications get refused — and what you can do to get it right the first time

❌ Common Reasons Applications Get Refused

  • Insufficient bank balance or inconsistent financial statements
  • Sudden large deposits just before applying (looks suspicious)
  • Incomplete, missing, or contradictory documents
  • Vague or unconvincing travel itinerary
  • No previous international travel history
  • Weak ties to India — no job, no property, no family
  • Previous Schengen visa overstays or immigration violations
  • Travel insurance not meeting the €30,000 minimum or missing coverage
  • Suspected intention to overstay or migrate
  • Incorrect or mismatched information on application form

✅ How to Strengthen Your Application

  • Write a detailed, specific cover letter — purpose, itinerary, accommodation, financing
  • Maintain clean and consistent bank statements — organic balance over 3–6 months
  • Show stable, documented employment or business income
  • Include a well-planned day-by-day travel itinerary with hotel bookings
  • Provide strong ties to India — employment letter, property ownership, family members
  • Include previous travel history (any country) to establish credibility
  • Use refundable flight bookings — don't over-commit before approval
  • Double-check all document requirements before submission
📊 Financial Benchmark — What is Generally Expected
Short Trip (1–2 weeks)
₹1.5 – 2 Lakhs
Minimum recommended balance
Standard Trip (2–4 weeks)
₹2 – 3 Lakhs
With confirmed hotel & flight bookings
Extended Stay (max 90 days)
₹5 Lakhs+
Consistent income matters more than lump sum

There is no officially fixed minimum — but consistent income and organic savings carry more weight than a one-time inflated balance.

✈️ First-Time International Travellers — Special Guidance
  • Having no prior travel history is common and is not an automatic rejection trigger
  • Compensate with stronger financial documents — longer bank statement history, clear income proof
  • Provide additional supporting documents: property ownership, income tax returns, fixed deposits
  • A well-written, convincing cover letter explaining your personal and professional ties to India becomes even more important
  • Consider applying for a shorter initial trip — a 5–7 day itinerary with tight planning is easier to justify than an open-ended 3-week trip for a first-time applicant

🧠 How Visa Officers Think — The One Question That Decides Everything

Every France visa officer evaluates your application through a single lens: "Is this person likely to return to India, or are they a risk of overstaying?"

Your application must proactively answer this question by demonstrating three things: financial stability (you can fund the trip without needing to work), employment or business ties (you have a reason to come back), and family or personal roots (property, dependents, long-term commitments in India).

A strong application does not just prove you want to visit France — it proves you have compelling reasons to return home. That is the mindset to keep while assembling every document in your file.

France Transit Visa for Indians — Airport Transit Rules
Understand when you need a visa just to pass through a French airport
✅ When Indian Citizens Generally Do NOT Need a Transit Visa
  • You remain entirely within the international transit area (airside) without clearing French immigration
  • You have a confirmed onward flight ticket departing from the same airport
  • Your transit involves no change of airport in France
  • You hold a valid US, UK, or current Schengen visa (exemption applies — verify before travel)
⚠️ When You WILL Need a Visa for Transit
  • You need to pass through French immigration and enter the Schengen territory, even briefly
  • Your layover requires an overnight hotel stay outside the airport
  • You need to change airports in France (e.g., CDG to Orly)
  • Your itinerary includes multiple Schengen stops where you must clear immigration
  • You have separate tickets requiring re-check-in through immigration
Real Travel Scenarios — At a Glance
✅ No Visa Required
Delhi → Paris CDG → USA (same terminal, airside only)
✅ No Visa Required
Mumbai → Paris CDG → Canada (direct airside transfer, same airport)
❌ Visa Required
Delhi → Paris → Rome (you are entering the Schengen Area — need Type C visa)
❌ Visa Required
Delhi → Paris (overnight stay) → onwards (must clear immigration for hotel)
❌ Visa Required
Delhi → Paris CDGParis Orly → onwards (airport change = immigration)
❌ Visa Required
Separate tickets where re-check-in requires passing through French immigration
⚠️ Common Mistakes Travellers Make
  • Booking separate tickets — each leg on a different PNR may require re-check-in through immigration, making a transit visa mandatory even for short layovers
  • Assuming long layovers are automatically allowed — duration is irrelevant if you stay airside; what matters is whether you cross immigration
  • Not confirming airport transfer logistics — if connecting flights are at different terminals in different immigration zones, a visa may be required
💡 Important Note on Transit Rules Across Schengen

Transit rules vary country by country within the Schengen Area. France is generally considered more flexible compared to stricter countries like Germany or Switzerland, but you must never assume — always verify the current requirements with the French Embassy or on the official france-visas.gouv.fr portal before booking your tickets. Rules can change without advance public notice.

Complete Guide to France Tourist Visa from India

Planning a trip to France? Whether you want to wander through the romantic boulevards of Paris, relax on the sun-drenched beaches of the French Riviera, or explore the grand châteaux of the Loire Valley, Indian citizens require a France Tourist Visa — officially known as a Schengen Type C Visa — before departure.

What is a Schengen Type C Visa?

A Schengen Type C visa is a short-stay travel authorisation that allows you to visit any of the 26 Schengen Area member countries for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. When your primary destination is France, you apply through the French Embassy or Consulate and their authorised visa application partner, VFS Global. With this single visa, you can also travel freely to other Schengen nations including Italy, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Netherlands, and more.

France Visa Processing Time from India

Processing typically takes 3 to 15 working days after submission. Major centres like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru tend to be faster (5–10 days), while smaller or Temporary Service Point locations may take closer to 15 days. It is strongly recommended to apply at least 3–4 weeks before your travel date, especially during peak travel seasons from March to July and September to December.

France Visa Fee Structure for 2026

The official visa fee is €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 12 years. Children under 6 travel free of visa fee. An additional VFS service fee of €22 per applicant is charged separately and must be paid online. All EUR amounts are converted to INR at the exchange rate set daily by the French authorities — the exact INR figure varies. Fees are non-refundable regardless of the visa outcome.

Important Tips for a Successful France Visa Application

  • Your passport must have at least 6 months validity beyond your return date and 2 blank pages
  • Travel insurance with a minimum coverage of €30,000 is mandatory and must cover COVID-19 related medical expenses
  • Write a clear, detailed cover letter explaining your travel purpose, itinerary, accommodation, and financial arrangements
  • Show adequate bank balance — approximately €65 per day with hotel bookings, or €120 per day if staying with a host
  • Demonstrate strong ties to India (employment letter, property, family) to confirm your intention to return
  • Book refundable flights and hotels until your visa is confirmed to avoid financial loss
  • Never submit false or inconsistent information — even minor discrepancies can trigger a refusal and potential travel ban

Common Reasons for France Visa Refusal

Being aware of common rejection reasons helps you build a stronger application:

  • Insufficient financial proof or low bank balance
  • Travel itinerary that is incomplete, inconsistent, or vague
  • Missing or inadequate travel medical insurance
  • Weak demonstration of ties to India
  • Previous visa violations, overstays, or refusals on record
  • Suspicion of intention to overstay or immigrate
  • Incomplete or incorrectly filled application form

Visa Validity and Multiple Entry Options

First-time applicants are generally granted a single-entry visa matching their exact travel dates. Frequent travellers with a clean Schengen history may be eligible for multiple-entry visas valid for 1 year, 3 years, or even 5 years, permitting repeated visits within the 90/180-day rule. Building a positive travel history is the most reliable way to earn longer-validity multiple-entry Schengen visas.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick, honest answers to the most common France visa questions from Indian applicants
1How long can I stay in France with a tourist visa?
With a Schengen Type C tourist visa, you can stay in France and any other Schengen country for a maximum of 90 days within any 180-day period. The 180-day window is rolling — not a fixed calendar period — so overstaying even by one day can have serious consequences for future visa applications.
2Can I visit other European countries with a France Schengen visa?
Yes. A France Schengen visa grants you access to all 26 Schengen Area countries — Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Greece, Portugal, and more. The only condition is that France must be your primary destination (longest or first stay) when you apply. If another country is your main destination, you must apply at that country's consulate instead.
3Is travel insurance mandatory for a France visa?
Yes, Schengen travel medical insurance is a mandatory requirement under EU regulations. The policy must cover a minimum of €30,000, be valid across the entire Schengen Area for your full travel duration, and include coverage for emergency medical treatment, hospitalisation, repatriation, and COVID-19 related expenses. Applications without valid insurance are routinely rejected.
4Do I need to book flights before visa approval?
The embassy requires flight reservation proof with your application — but not fully paid, non-refundable tickets. You should book a tentative or refundable reservation (many airlines and agencies offer this) that shows your intended travel dates. This protects you financially in case of a refusal. Avoid purchasing non-refundable tickets until your visa is in hand.
5What happens if my France visa application is rejected?
You will receive a refusal letter clearly stating the reason(s). You have two options: address the specific issues and reapply with a stronger application, or file a formal appeal within 2 months of the refusal date. Keep in mind that visa fees are non-refundable. One refusal does not permanently ban you — many applicants are approved on a second or third attempt after strengthening their documentation.
6Can I extend my France tourist visa once I am in France?
Schengen tourist visas cannot normally be extended from within France or any other Schengen country. Extensions are only granted in exceptional circumstances — genuine medical emergencies, force majeure events, or other humanitarian situations beyond the applicant's control. You must apply for an extension at the local préfecture before your visa expires. Overstaying without extension approval is a serious immigration violation.
7How much bank balance is required for a France visa?
There is no single fixed number, but as a general benchmark the French Consulate expects approximately €65 per day of your stay if you have confirmed hotel bookings, or around €120 per day if you are staying with a host without proof of accommodation support. Beyond the raw balance, what matters equally is the consistency of your account — regular income, no sudden large deposits just before applying, and a clear financial history.
8Is biometric enrollment mandatory?
Yes, biometric data — ten fingerprints and a live photograph — is mandatory for all Schengen visa applicants aged 12 and above. Once enrolled, your biometrics remain valid for 59 months (approximately 5 years), meaning repeat Schengen applicants may be exempt from re-enrollment during that window. Children under 12 are exempt from biometric collection. Biometrics cannot be submitted by a third party on your behalf.
9Can someone with a criminal record, or under investigation by ED / CBI, apply for a France tourist visa?
Having a criminal record does not automatically disqualify you from applying, but it significantly affects the outcome. The French Consulate conducts independent security and background checks. Applicants with pending criminal cases, active court proceedings, or investigations by agencies like the Enforcement Directorate (ED) or Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) face a very high probability of refusal — particularly if the nature of the case involves financial fraud, money laundering, or offences that raise immigration risk flags. If you are under any legal proceedings, it is strongly advisable to consult an immigration attorney before applying, as a rejection in such circumstances may result in a longer-term ban from Schengen countries.
10Some agencies claim they can guarantee a France visa for extra payment — is this legitimate?
No — visa decisions are made exclusively by the French Consulate and no agency, consultant, or individual has any ability to influence that decision. Any agent claiming to "guarantee" your visa approval in exchange for extra payment is either misleading you or, in the worst case, involved in fraudulent activity. What a legitimate agency can do is help you compile a complete and well-organised application — which improves your chances — but they cannot guarantee approval. Always use the official VFS Global portal at visa.vfsglobal.com for appointments and fee payments.
11Do Indian citizens need a transit visa to pass through France?
It depends on the nature of your transit. If you are transiting through a French airport and staying airside (within the international transit zone, without passing through French immigration), you may require a Schengen Airport Transit Visa (ATV) — this is Category A. If your layover requires you to exit immigration, collect baggage, or stay overnight in France, you need a standard Schengen Type C visa. Indian passport holders with a valid US visa, UK visa, or a valid Schengen visa may be exempt from the ATV requirement. Always verify the current rules at the French Embassy or on the France-Visas portal before travelling, as transit visa requirements can change.
12Does the transit visa requirement depend on how long the connecting flight layover is?
The duration of your layover alone does not determine whether you need a transit visa. What matters is whether you remain within the international transit area (airside) or must pass through French immigration and border control. A 10-hour layover that stays fully airside typically does not require an ATV (subject to nationality and visa exemptions), while even a short 2-hour layover that requires immigration clearance — due to a terminal change, baggage claim, or overnight stop — would require a full Schengen visa. Always confirm this with your airline and the French Embassy before booking.
