For photographers, the green season is paradise. The lush vegetation provides a stunning contrast to wildlife, and the dramatic, heavy storm clouds rolling over the savanna create iconic, award-winning photographic opportunities that are impossible to capture in the dry season.

While the Maasai Mara can feel like a traffic jam during the July–October peak season, the green season offers near-total exclusivity. You might be the only vehicle at a lion kill, providing a deeply personal and uninterrupted connection with nature.

In the broader Mara-Serengeti ecosystem, the green season triggers the calving season. Thousands of wildebeest and zebra give birth within a few weeks. This explosion of vulnerable young attracts high concentrations of predators. Seeing a cheetah hunt or a pride of lions coordinate an attack is far more likely during this period than in the dry season.

Kenya is home to over 1,000 bird species, and the green season is when Palaearctic and intra-African migratory birds arrive in massive numbers. Lakes like Nakuru and Bogoria explode with color, and the savannas are filled with breeding plumage and active nesting behaviors, making it a paradise for birding enthusiasts.

• Rain Gear: A high-quality, lightweight, waterproof jacket is mandatory. Do not rely on the vehicle's roof alone.
• Footwear: Waterproof hiking boots or shoes are essential, as morning dew and mud are common.
• Layers: Rain brings a sharp drop in temperature. Pack a warm fleece or down jacket for early morning game drives.
• Protection: Waterproof covers for your camera and binoculars are highly recommended.

• Vehicle Choice: Ensure your tour operator provides a 4x4 Land Cruiser, not a 2WD van. High clearance is critical for muddy tracks.
• Lodge Selection: A few remote camps close during the peak of the long rains (late April/early May). Book with established, year-round lodges that have reliable generators and well-maintained access roads.
