The official currency is the Rwandan Franc (RWF). For Indian travelers, the most critical rule is that Indian Rupees (INR) cannot be exchanged in Rwanda. You must carry your travel budget in US Dollars (USD) and exchange it for RWF upon arrival, or withdraw RWF directly from ATMs using an international debit card.   • Kigali International Airport: Has forex bureaus, but rates are slightly less favorable than in the city.
  • Downtown Kigali: Authorized forex bureaus (e.g., Renaissance, SpeedAfrika) in the city center offer the best, most transparent exchange rates.
  • Hotels & Lodges: Can exchange money, but typically at a significant premium. Avoid unless absolutely necessary.

The 2013 Series Rule

Rwandan banks and forex bureaus strictly reject US Dollar bills printed before 2013. Older series notes (even if in perfect condition) will not be accepted. When purchasing USD in India before your trip, explicitly request the new, crisp, blue-striped series. Additionally, ensure the notes are free of any tears, markings, or heavy creases, as minor damage can also lead to rejection.

ATMs are widely available and safe in Kigali, Musanze, and Lake Kivu. Major reliable banks include Bank of Kigali (BK), I&M Bank, and Equity Bank. They dispense RWF and accept international Visa and Mastercard debit cards. Notify your Indian bank about your travel dates to prevent your card from being blocked for suspected fraud.

Cards vs. Cash vs. UPI

  • Credit/Debit Cards: Widely accepted in mid-range to luxury hotels, upscale restaurants, and supermarkets in Kigali.
  • Cash is King: Essential for local markets, street food, tips, and rural areas. Always carry small RWF denominations.
  • UPI/Digital Payments: Completely unavailable. Apps like Paytm, PhonePe, or BharatPe do not work in Rwanda. Do not rely on them for any transactions.

Who to Tip & How Much

  • Gorilla Trekking Porters: USD 20 is the standard and highly expected fee. They provide invaluable physical assistance and support the local community.
  • Restaurant Staff: 5–10% of the bill is appreciated if a service charge is not already included. Check the bill first.
  • Driver-Guides: RWF 3,000 – 5,000 (approx. ₹200–₹350) per day is a generous and welcome tip for excellent service.
  • Hotel Housekeeping: RWF 2,000 – 3,000 per day left in the room is a thoughtful gesture.
