Victoria Falls: The Adventure Capital of Africa
What Indian travelers need to know about the bustling tourist hub on the Zambezi River.

Safari Hub Note: Victoria Falls town is compact, walkable, and entirely focused on tourism. Most Indian travelers fly directly into Victoria Falls Airport (VFA) from Harare or Johannesburg to begin their waterfall and safari adventures. For a complete destination overview, see our Zimbabwe Travel Guide.

Safety & Best Neighborhoods
Where to stay and how to navigate the town securely.

The Resort Area (Recommended)

The main tourist resort area is where 95% of hotels, lodges, and restaurants are located. It is highly secure, heavily patrolled, and very walkable.

  • Environment: Leafy, quiet streets with wide sidewalks. Very popular with international tourists and expats.
  • Safety: Extremely safe to walk around during the day and early evening. Hotels here have strict security protocols.
  • Convenience: Within a 10–20 minute walk to the Victoria Falls National Park entrance and the main curio markets.

Maramba Township (Exercise Caution)

The commercial and residential town center, known as Maramba, is located a few kilometers from the resort area. It is where locals live, shop, and work.

  • Environment: Busy markets, local supermarkets, and budget guesthouses. Authentic but chaotic.
  • Safety: Safe during the day for a guided tour or quick shopping trip, but do not walk here at night.
  • General Rule: If you need to visit the town center, use a registered taxi or your hotel's shuttle. Keep valuables hidden and avoid flashing cameras.
Getting Around Victoria Falls
Navigating the town from the airport and between attractions.

Victoria Falls town is small and highly tourist-friendly. You will rarely need transport once you are in the resort area.

  • Walking: The best way to get around the resort area. Paths to the falls entrance, the Lookout Cafe, and local shops are well-maintained and scenic.
  • Ride-Hailing Apps: InDrive and Yango operate in Victoria Falls. They are reliable for trips from the resort area to the airport or the town center. Fares are paid in cash (USD).
  • Airport Transfer: VFA Airport is only 20 minutes from the resort area. Most lodges offer free shuttles. If not, a taxi costs USD 15–25. Avoid unmarked cabs at the terminal.
  • Wildlife Warning: Baboons, warthogs, and occasionally elephants wander near the roads on the outskirts of town. Do not approach or feed the animals, and avoid walking on isolated roads after sunset.

Top Attractions & Activities
Beyond the waterfall, Victoria Falls is the adventure capital of Africa.

The Falls & Devil's Pool

The main event. The Zimbabwean side offers 75% of the frontal views of the falls via a network of rainforest walking trails.

  • Victoria Falls National Park: Entry is USD 30. Wear a raincoat or poncho during the wet season (Feb–May) as the mist will soak you.
  • Devil's Pool: The famous infinity pool on the edge of the falls. Only accessible during low water levels (mid-August to mid-January). Costs approx. USD 100–130 including transport and guide.

Adventure & Scenic Flights

For adrenaline seekers or those wanting a bird's-eye view of the Zambezi River.

  • Flight of Angels: A microlight or helicopter tour over the falls and gorge. Highly recommended for photography. (USD 150–350).
  • Zambezi Sunset Cruise: A gentle 2-hour boat ride to see hippos, crocodiles, and elephants drinking on the banks while watching the sunset. (USD 50–80).
  • White-Water Rafting: Grade 5 rapids in the Batoka Gorge. One of the best half-day rafting experiences in the world.
Dining, Groceries & Shopping
Where to eat and buy authentic souvenirs in the resort town.

Dining Options

The resort area has a surprising variety of excellent restaurants, catering to international tastes and dietary requirements.

  • The Lookout Cafe: Perched on the edge of the Batoka Gorge with spectacular views. Great for breakfast and lunch.
  • The Elephant's Camp: Famous for its "Feast at the Boma" — a multi-course dinner under the stars with traditional drumming and dancing.
  • Vegetarian Options: Most upscale restaurants offer excellent vegetarian pastas, risottos, and salads. Always inform your lodge in advance if you have strict dietary needs.

Shopping & Curio Markets

Shopping is a major activity here, but you must be prepared to negotiate.

  • Victoria Falls Curio Market: Located near the falls entrance. Hundreds of stalls selling wood carvings, soapstone animals, and batik textiles. Bargaining is mandatory — start at 50% of the asking price.
  • Payment: You MUST carry crisp, new USD cash (post-2013). Vendors do not accept cards, and torn or old notes will be rejected.
  • Supermarkets: For snacks, water, and basic supplies, the Spar and Pick n Pay in the town center are well-stocked. Take a taxi to get there.

Frequently Asked Questions — Victoria Falls City Guide
Quick, honest answers to the most common city transit and safety questions from Indian travellers.
1Is Victoria Falls safe for Indian tourists at night?
The tourist resort area where most hotels and lodges are located is very safe and well-patrolled. However, you should avoid walking in the town center (Maramba) after dark. Always use your hotel's shuttle or a registered taxi if traveling to the town center in the evening.
2How do I get from Victoria Falls Airport (VFA) to my hotel?
Victoria Falls Airport is small and located just 20 minutes from the town center. Most lodges and hotels offer complimentary or pre-arranged airport transfers. If not, you can use app-based taxis like InDrive or hire a registered taxi at the airport for about USD 15–25.
3What is the best time to visit Victoria Falls for Devil's Pool?
Devil's Pool is only safe to swim when the water levels are low, typically from mid-August to mid-January. For the best balance of good weather and accessible pools, September to November is ideal. Check our best time to visit Zimbabwe guide for month-by-month water level details.
4Can I walk to the Victoria Falls entrance from my hotel?
Yes, if you are staying in the main resort area, the entrance to the Victoria Falls National Park is within walking distance (10–20 minutes). The paths are well-maintained, but it is recommended to walk in pairs and avoid the roadsides after sunset due to wildlife like baboons and elephants occasionally wandering near town.
5Do I need a special visa to visit the Zambian side of Victoria Falls?
If you want to cross the border to see the Zambian side or visit Livingstone, you must have the KAZA UniVisa (USD 50). This visa allows unlimited entries between Zimbabwe and Zambia for 30 days. If you only have a single-entry Zimbabwe e-Visa, you will need to buy a separate Zambian visa when crossing back.

Note: Activity pricing and availability (especially for Devil's Pool and helicopter flights) are highly seasonal and subject to Zambezi River water levels. Always book premium activities through your lodge or a reputable tour operator. Prices are estimated in USD and may fluctuate.
