Gateway to Chobe & Victoria Falls 2026

• Role: Kasane is the primary gateway to Chobe National Park, famous for having the highest concentration of elephants in Africa.
• Vibe: Unlike the remote, flight-only lodges of the Okavango, Kasane is a road-accessible town with a mix of backpacker hostels, mid-range hotels, and luxury riverfront lodges.
• Strategic Location: It sits at the Kazungula quadripoint, where the borders of Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Namibia nearly meet.

As detailed in our complete Botswana travel guide, Kasane offers a completely different safari experience compared to Maun — focusing heavily on water-based activities and massive elephant herds rather than mokoro canoeing.

• Standard Itinerary: 2 to 3 Nights. This allows for one full day in Chobe National Park and a sunset river cruise.
• Victoria Falls Extension: Add 1 extra night if you plan to cross the border into Zimbabwe for a day trip to the falls.
• Budget Option: Kasane is one of the few places in Botswana where budget travelers can find affordable guesthouses and join shared group safaris.

• Flights: Regular scheduled flights from Maun (via Air Botswana or local charters) and Johannesburg (via Airlink).
• Immigration: Small and efficient. The airport is only 5km from the town center.
• Transfers: Most lodges offer complimentary airport transfers. Taxis are also readily available (agree on the fare before getting in).
• Facilities: Very basic. A small waiting area, a few souvenir stalls, and restrooms. No major car rental desks inside the terminal; arrange these in advance.

• Destination: The primary route to Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) or Livingstone (Zambia).
• Distance: 90km to Victoria Falls town (approx. 1.5 hours drive).
• One-Stop Border: Kazungula is a modern "one-stop" border post. You clear both Botswana exit and Zimbabwe entry in a single building complex.
• Visa Note: Indian passport holders require a visa for Zimbabwe. You can obtain a Visa on Arrival for $30 USD (single entry) or apply for an e-Visa beforehand. Carry crisp, post-2013 USD bills.
• Tip: Cross early in the morning (by 7:30 AM) to avoid long queues and maximize your time at the falls.

• Location: Located right in the town center, near the ferry crossing.
• Specialty: This is one of the best places in Botswana to buy authentic, intricately woven palm-leaf baskets.
• Other Items: Wood carvings (elephants, giraffes), beadwork, and local textiles.
• Etiquette: Bargaining is expected. Start at about 50% of the asking price and meet in the middle. Carry small USD or BWP notes.

• Currency: Botswana Pula (BWP). ATMs exist in town but can be unreliable. Bring USD cash for tips, crafts, and border fees.
• Cards: Major credit cards are accepted at all lodges, larger restaurants, and the main supermarket.
• SIM Cards: Mascom and Orange shops are available in town. Coverage is generally good in Kasane but drops inside the deeper parts of Chobe.
• Wi-Fi: Available in most hotels and lodges, but speeds can be slow. Download offline maps before heading into the park.

• Malaria: Kasane and Chobe are in a high-risk malaria zone. Prophylaxis is mandatory. Use DEET insect repellent and wear long sleeves at dusk.
• Water: Drink only bottled or filtered water. Do not drink from the tap.
• Safety: Kasane is safe, but baboons and vervet monkeys are notorious for stealing food and sunglasses from unattended balconies or open car windows. Keep everything secured.
• Parking: When parking in town or at viewpoints, never leave bags visible in your car. The monkeys will break in.
