Welcome to Kasane: The Elephant Capital of Botswana
A vibrant frontier town situated at the convergence of four countries and the lifeblood of Chobe National Park.

The River Hub

  • Role: Kasane is the primary gateway to Chobe National Park, famous for having the highest concentration of elephants in Africa.
  • Vibe: Unlike the remote, flight-only lodges of the Okavango, Kasane is a road-accessible town with a mix of backpacker hostels, mid-range hotels, and luxury riverfront lodges.
  • Strategic Location: It sits at the Kazungula quadripoint, where the borders of Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Namibia nearly meet.

As detailed in our complete Botswana travel guide, Kasane offers a completely different safari experience compared to Maun — focusing heavily on water-based activities and massive elephant herds rather than mokoro canoeing.

How Long to Stay?

  • Standard Itinerary: 2 to 3 Nights. This allows for one full day in Chobe National Park and a sunset river cruise.
  • Victoria Falls Extension: Add 1 extra night if you plan to cross the border into Zimbabwe for a day trip to the falls.
  • Budget Option: Kasane is one of the few places in Botswana where budget travelers can find affordable guesthouses and join shared group safaris.

If you are optimizing your Botswana trip cost from India, basing yourself in a Kasane guesthouse and doing shared day trips into Chobe is significantly cheaper than staying inside the park's luxury lodges.

Kasane Airport (KAS) & Border Crossings
Navigating the logistics of Botswana's northern frontier.

Arriving at KAS

  • Flights: Regular scheduled flights from Maun (via Air Botswana or local charters) and Johannesburg (via Airlink).
  • Immigration: Small and efficient. The airport is only 5km from the town center.
  • Transfers: Most lodges offer complimentary airport transfers. Taxis are also readily available (agree on the fare before getting in).
  • Facilities: Very basic. A small waiting area, a few souvenir stalls, and restrooms. No major car rental desks inside the terminal; arrange these in advance.

The Kazungula Border Post

  • Destination: The primary route to Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) or Livingstone (Zambia).
  • Distance: 90km to Victoria Falls town (approx. 1.5 hours drive).
  • One-Stop Border: Kazungula is a modern "one-stop" border post. You clear both Botswana exit and Zimbabwe entry in a single building complex.
  • Visa Note: Indian passport holders require a visa for Zimbabwe. You can obtain a Visa on Arrival for $30 USD (single entry) or apply for an e-Visa beforehand. Carry crisp, post-2013 USD bills.
  • Tip: Cross early in the morning (by 7:30 AM) to avoid long queues and maximize your time at the falls.

Crossing the border is a popular extension for those following our 7-day Botswana itinerary, allowing you to combine wildlife with one of the world's greatest natural wonders.

Things to Do in Kasane & Chobe
Beyond the game drives, here is how to experience the unique riverine environment.

Chobe River Sunset Cruise

  • The Experience: A relaxed 2-hour boat ride along the Chobe River as the sun goes down.
  • Wildlife: Famous for watching elephants swim across the river, pods of hippos, basking crocodiles, and fish eagles.
  • Inclusions: Most cruises include sundowners (gin & tonics, beers, soft drinks) and snacks.
  • Best For: Families, photographers, and travelers who want a break from the bumpy 4x4 game drives.

Kasane Craft Market

  • Location: Located right in the town center, near the ferry crossing.
  • Specialty: This is one of the best places in Botswana to buy authentic, intricately woven palm-leaf baskets.
  • Other Items: Wood carvings (elephants, giraffes), beadwork, and local textiles.
  • Etiquette: Bargaining is expected. Start at about 50% of the asking price and meet in the middle. Carry small USD or BWP notes.
Logistics, Health & Practical Tips
Essential information for staying in Kasane and visiting Chobe National Park.

Money & Connectivity

  • Currency: Botswana Pula (BWP). ATMs exist in town but can be unreliable. Bring USD cash for tips, crafts, and border fees.
  • Cards: Major credit cards are accepted at all lodges, larger restaurants, and the main supermarket.
  • SIM Cards: Mascom and Orange shops are available in town. Coverage is generally good in Kasane but drops inside the deeper parts of Chobe.
  • Wi-Fi: Available in most hotels and lodges, but speeds can be slow. Download offline maps before heading into the park.

Health & Safety

  • Malaria: Kasane and Chobe are in a high-risk malaria zone. Prophylaxis is mandatory. Use DEET insect repellent and wear long sleeves at dusk.
  • Water: Drink only bottled or filtered water. Do not drink from the tap.
  • Safety: Kasane is safe, but baboons and vervet monkeys are notorious for stealing food and sunglasses from unattended balconies or open car windows. Keep everything secured.
  • Parking: When parking in town or at viewpoints, never leave bags visible in your car. The monkeys will break in.

Frequently Asked Questions — Kasane City Guide
Quick answers to logistics and travel questions about Kasane for Indian tourists.
1Is Kasane safe for Indian tourists?
Yes, Kasane is very safe for tourists. It is a small, tourism-dependent town where visitors are highly valued. Standard precautions apply: do not walk alone at night outside the town center, and keep valuables secure during border crossings.
2How far is Kasane from Victoria Falls?
Kasane is approximately 90 kilometers (about a 90-minute drive) from the Zimbabwean side of Victoria Falls via the Kazungula border post. Many Indian travelers use Kasane as a base to visit the falls for the day before their international flight home.
3Do Indians need a visa to cross from Kasane to Victoria Falls?
Yes. While Botswana is visa-free for Indians, Zimbabwe requires a visa. Indian passport holders can obtain a Visa on Arrival at the Kazungula border for approximately $30 USD (single entry) or apply for an e-Visa in advance. Always carry crisp, post-2013 USD bills for border fees.
4What is the best activity to do in Kasane?
The absolute highlight is a sunset boat safari on the Chobe River. You will see massive herds of elephants swimming across the river, hippos, crocodiles, and spectacular birdlife. It is a much more relaxed experience compared to a dusty 4x4 game drive.
5Are there ATMs in Kasane?
Yes, there are a few ATMs in Kasane town (FNB and Stanbic), but they can occasionally run out of cash or experience network issues. It is highly recommended to withdraw your Botswana Pula in Maun or Gaborone, or rely on USD cash and credit cards.

Note: Kasane is a bustling border town. While it offers excellent access to Chobe and Victoria Falls, the true luxury safari experience is found in the lodges situated along the river or inside the park. Always confirm your Zimbabwe visa requirements well in advance of your trip.
