Kigali is more than just a transit hub for gorilla trekking; it is a destination in its own right. Known for its rolling hills, vibrant art scene, and strict cleanliness laws, it offers Indian travelers a refreshing, safe, and highly organized urban experience. Kigali consistently ranks as the safest city in Africa. Streets are spotless (thanks to the monthly Umuganda community cleanup), well-lit, and heavily patrolled. Indian families and solo female travelers report feeling completely secure exploring the city, even after dark.

A profoundly moving and essential visit to understand Rwanda’s history. The memorial honors the victims of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. Allow 2–3 hours for the exhibitions. Entry is free, but donations are welcomed. It is a somber but deeply educational experience.

• Yego Moto / Move: The most popular motorcycle taxi apps. Safe, helmet-provided, and significantly faster in traffic. Costs around RWF 1,500–3,000 for short trips.
• Uber / Bolt: Available for standard 4-seater cars. Ideal for families or travelers with luggage. Fares are transparent and metered.
• Private Driver: For a full day of sightseeing, hiring a car with a driver-guide costs approximately USD 40–60 per day, offering maximum comfort and flexibility.

• Heaven Restaurant: Famous for its panoramic city views and excellent Rwandan coffee. Offers great vegetarian and vegan options alongside local dishes.
• Republika Lounge: A vibrant spot in the Kigali Heights complex, perfect for evening drinks, live music, and a mix of African and continental cuisine.
• The Good Life Cafe: A highly recommended vegan and vegetarian-friendly cafe in Nyarutarama, offering fresh salads, smoothies, and plant-based bowls.
• Local Brochettes: For authentic street food, try grilled goat or beef skewers (brochettes) served with fried plantains (mizuzu) at local eateries.

• Plastic Bag Ban: Rwanda strictly bans single-use plastic bags. Your luggage may be checked at Kigali International Airport, and plastic bags will be confiscated. Bring reusable cloth bags.
• Umuganda: On the last Saturday of every month, from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM, all non-essential movement is restricted. Shops and transport close while citizens clean the city. Plan to be at your hotel during this window.
• Currency: Carry USD (printed 2013 or later) for visa fees and exchange to Rwandan Francs (RWF) for daily expenses. UPI is not available; international cards work in major establishments.
• Greetings: A simple "Muraho" (Hello) in Kinyarwanda goes a long way in building rapport with friendly locals.
