Located just a short dhow ride or walk from Lamu Town, Shela Beach is a stunning 3-kilometer stretch of pristine white sand and calm, turquoise waters.

• Activities: Swimming, kite surfing, sunset dhow cruises, and beachfront dining at boutique lodges.
• Access: Easily reachable by a 15-minute traditional dhow crossing from Lamu Jetty.

• General Safety: Lamu is generally very safe and welcoming to tourists. The close-knit community looks out for visitors.
• Modest Dress: Lamu is a conservative Muslim society. Both men and women should dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered) when walking through Lamu Town. Swimwear is acceptable only on Shela Beach or at private hotel pools.
• Night Travel: Avoid walking alone in unlit, isolated areas of the island after dark. Stick to well-traveled paths or arrange for hotel transport.
• Photography: Always ask for explicit permission before photographing local residents, especially women.

• By Air: Fly from Nairobi (Wilson Airport) or Mombasa (Moi International Airport) to Manda Airstrip (MYD) or Lamu Airport (LAU) via airlines like SafariLink or AirKenya (approx. 1 hour).
• Water Transfer: A short, scenic 5 to 10-minute boat or dhow transfer connects the airstrip to Lamu Town or Shela.
• On the Island: There are no cars. Get around on foot, by hiring a donkey with a local handler, or by taking a traditional wooden dhow for longer coastal hops.
• Luggage: Pack light in soft-sided bags, as navigating narrow alleys and boat transfers with large, hard-shell suitcases is difficult.

Swahili cuisine is naturally accommodating to vegetarians, relying heavily on coconut, rice, beans, and fresh local produce.

• Swahili Biryani: A fragrant, spiced rice dish cooked with vegetables or meat, heavily influenced by Indian culinary traditions.
• Maharagwe: A rich, creamy coconut bean stew, typically served with fluffy chapati or rice (naturally vegetarian and delicious).
