Conservation Over Commercialization
The single biggest line item in a Uganda safari budget is the Mountain Gorilla Trekking Permit, priced at $800 USD (approx. ₹65,000) for foreign non-residents.
- Limited Access: Only 8 tourists are allowed to trek a single gorilla family per day. This scarcity drives the price.
- Conservation Funding: The fee directly funds the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) anti-poaching units, veterinary care for the gorillas, and habitat protection in Bwindi.
- Community Support: A percentage of the fee goes to local communities surrounding the park, incentivizing them to protect the gorillas rather than poach them.
- Booking Window: Permits sell out 6 to 12 months in advance, especially for the peak seasons (June–August and December–February).
If the gorilla permit stretches your budget, consider a "Classic Uganda" itinerary that focuses on Queen Elizabeth National Park (tree-climbing lions) and Murchison Falls, which eliminates the $800 fee and reduces the total trip cost by nearly ₹70,000.
