Top Things to Do in San José
From pre-Columbian gold to vibrant market halls, here are the absolute must-do cultural experiences in the capital.

Mercado Central

The oldest and most vibrant public market in the city. It is a sensory overload of coffee aromas, spices, leather goods, and local snacks.

  • Must Do: Grab a traditional "Casado" at one of the internal Sodas, and buy freshly roasted Tarrazú coffee beans to take back to India.
  • Tip: Keep your valuables secure and wear your backpack on your front in the crowded aisles.

Museo Nacional de Costa Rica

Housed in the beautiful Bellavista Fortress (which still bears bullet holes from the 1948 civil war), this museum covers everything from pre-Columbian history to modern Costa Rican culture.

  • Entry Fee: Approx. $10 USD for foreigners
  • Tip: The courtyard garden is a peaceful oasis filled with pre-Columbian stone spheres and statues.

Teatro Nacional

A stunning 19th-century neoclassical opera house funded by coffee barons. It is considered one of the most beautiful theaters in Central America.

  • Cost: Guided daytime tours are approx. $10 USD; evening performances vary.
  • Tip: Look up at the ceiling of the main auditorium to see the breathtaking fresco painted by an Italian artist depicting the history of music.

Museo del Oro Precolombino

Located under the Plaza de la Cultura, this museum houses the world's largest collection of pre-Columbian American jade and an incredible array of gold artifacts.

  • Entry Fee: Approx. $15 USD for foreigners
  • Tip: The museum recently underwent a massive renovation and is now a world-class, interactive experience.
