Markets vs. Malls
Mexico's shopping culture is deeply rooted in its indigenous heritage. While modern malls (like Antara in CDMX or La Isla in Cancun) offer international brands, the true soul of Mexican shopping lies in its mercados (markets) and tianguis (street markets).
- Mercados: Permanent market buildings housing dozens of stalls. They are clean, organized, and sell everything from fresh produce to high-end artisan crafts.
- Tianguis: Open-air street markets that set up on specific days of the week. They are chaotic, incredibly cheap, and offer a raw, authentic local experience.
- Boutiques: Upscale shops in neighborhoods like Roma (CDMX) or downtown Tulum that sell curated, fixed-price artisan goods.
