You will be met on arrival at Port Blair airport and taken to visit Corbyn’s Cove beach. Later proceed for sound and light show at Cellular Jail, to watch a fascinating saga of the Indian freedom struggle come alive in this national monument. Transfer you to your hotel for overnight.
Day 2
Port Blair - Webi
Our vehicle will be with you early morning to take you to Webi. The journey length is 230kms and will take 8hrs (12hrs including halts). You will be provided with a packed breakfast and snacks. You will depart Port Blair at 04:00 and reach the Jirkatang check-post at 05:30, where you will have an opportunity for tea and a light snack while your escort completes the formalities to join the convoy through the Jarawa Reserve section of the Andaman Trunk Road. The convoy departs at 06:00 and reaches Nilambur jetty by 07:30. Here, your vehicle will drive on to the vehicle ferry to cross over to Baratang Island, reaching by 08:15. While at Baratang, we will stop to visit its famous limestone caves. The journey to the caves involves a scenic (shared) speedboat ride eastwards through the mangrove-fringed Middle Strait, followed by a short trek through mangroves, forest, and field to the location of the caves with stalactite and stalagmite formations in the karst landscape. A 30-minute drive across Baratang will lead to the next vehicle ferry crossing point for Kadamtala on Middle Andaman Island, which you can expect to reach by 11:30. The town of Rangat is less than 2 hours away, and the group will stop here for lunch at 13:30. We will reach Webi village by 16:30 subsequently. In the evening, visit the Andaman Karen Center where your hosts will give you an introduction to the Karen tribe and teach the making of basic handicrafts.
Day 3
Webi
Guided trek in the forest, to Karmatang Beach or Beachdera. Your host, who is a trained naturalist, will arrange a guided trek through the village, into the rainforest, and beyond. Depending upon your fitness level and permits, the trek may extend up to Beach Dera or Karmatang Beach, a 3-4hrs walk through the jungle each way. At the other end, our vehicle will be waiting to bring you back should you choose to use it. Jungle survival: learning to fish the traditional way/crabbing in the creek. A local Karen villager will take you to one of the seasonally productive creeks to teach you their local fishing techniques, and you can try your hand at it to gauge your proficiency. Depending upon the phase of the moon, the time may be right for crabbing, in which case, you can learn how the Karens trap and gather mud crabs, a local delicacy.
Day 4
Webi
Cooking classes for Karen cuisine. Your host will help you prep and cook traditional Karen dishes including one or more of the following dishes Karen Salad, Napi paste from fish, Karen rice noodles, Tapo Pa (smoked meat/fish/veg), etc. Participate in farming (specific activity depending upon season). Help around the farm or with the farm animals or vegetable garden. Depending upon the season, you may be in time to assist with either rice planting, transplanting, harvesting, grinding, threshing, or winnowing. Learn how to make a shelter with natural materials (on a smaller scale). Make a scaled-down version of a basic Karen shed using locally growing traditional materials of cane, bamboo, and thatch.
