Somnath derives its name from its famous Somnath Temple, Somnath meaning The Protector of Moon God. According to the legend, the conceited Moon, otherwise called Chandra became so arrogant that her father-in-law cursed her to fade away. She prayed to Lord Shiva who gave partial respite from the curse, so she disappears periodically.
Somnath Temple
Somnath temple located in Prabhas Patan near Veraval in Saurashtra on the western coast of Gujarat is believed to be the first among the twelve jyotirlinga shrines of Shiva. It is an important pilgrimage and tourist spot in Gujarat.
Junagadh Gate
Junagadh Gate is one of the historical attractions nearby the Somnath temple of Prabhas Kshetra. Somnath can be reached only through the gateway called Junagadh Gate from the nearest city of Veraval. This gate was destroyed at the time of invasion by Mohammed Ghazni.
Triveni Ghat
Triveni Ghat in Somnath is the confluence of three holy rivers namely Kapil, Hiran, and a mystical River Saraswathy. It is believed that the rivers flow to the ultimate destination of Sea from here. This symbolizes human birth, life, and death. This is a sacred location for taking a dip in the Triveni Sangam.
Ahilyabai Temple
Ahilyabai temple was constructed as a substitute for the main Somnath temple when it was raided and ravaged. This temple was built by Rajmata Ahilyabai Holkar who patronized the Hindu religion in all its glory. When she saw the derelict condition of Somnath temple she built another temple that acted as a substitute to the original one.

Best Time To Visit Somnath
Somnath is one of the most popular pilgrimage destinations among the Hindus and the devotees pay a visit to the temple, throughout the year. However, the best time to visit the temple is during the winter season, when the weather remains pleasant and makes it easier for sightseeing. Somnath experiences a harsh summer, with a maximum temperature of 42° Celsius. The heat does not allow you to enjoy and explore the city in peace and this season is avoided by tourists. The monsoon is accompanied by heavy showers of rainfall and wind. The temperature decreases and brings relief from the summer heat, but the humidity level increases. Cyclones and storms are experienced in a post-monsoon period that arises in the Arabian Sea. The winter season is pleasant and cooler, very ideal for pilgrims to visit the temple. Besides the temple visitation, there are many places of interest like the Panch Pandav Gufa, Junagarh Gate, nearby cities of Bhavnagar and Porbandar.
