Katra or Katra Vaishno Devi, as it is popularly known, is a small town in Reasi district of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir situated in the foothills of the Trikuta Mountains, where the holy shrine of Vaishno Devi is located. It is located 42 km from the city of Jammu.
Vaishno Devi
Vaishno Devi, also known as Mata Rani, Trikuta, and Vaishnavi, is a manifestation of the Hindu Mother Goddess of Maha Kali, Maha Saraswati, and Maha Lakshmi.
Nau Devi Temple
The Nau Devi Temple is a popular tourist attraction for the pristine location it is situated in and for the high reverence, it is held at. A flight of about a hundred stairs leads to the small holy cave. Here, you will find “pind” of the nine ‘devis’ which are incarnations of Goddess Durga namely Shailaputri Devi, Bharmachirini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skanda mata, Katyayani, Maha Kali, Maha Gauri, and Siddhidatri.
Bhairon Temple
Bhairon Temple is located at a distance of 1.42 km from the Bhawan. It is believed that the journey to Mata Vaishno Devi is not complete without the darshan in Bhairon Temple.
Sanji Chhat
Sanji Chhat is a delightful little plateau two and a half kilometers short of the Holy Shrine of Vaishno Devi Ji. Since the upward gradient ends at this point a new Helipad was also constructed here. This helipad has facilitated the recent introduction of Helicopter Service between Katra and Sanjhichhat.
Himkoti
Himkoti doesn’t have any religious significance. It is visited by the tourists because of its majestic natural splendor. The spot is very clean and beautiful and offers you a panoramic view of the valley. Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Temple Board has developed a new route via Himkoti to the holy cave.
Darshani Darwaza
The entry gate to the track is around 1 km from the bus stand at a point known as Darshani Deodhi or Darshani Darwaza. Legend says that Mata Vaishno Devi met Pandit Shridhar at this spot in the form of a girl child. This is also known as Darshani Darwaza because from here one gets a complete view of the Trikuta parbat.
Jhajjar Kotli
Jhajjar Kotli is a quiet and tranquil place with a picnic spot to boast on. This place is located around 15 km from the town of Katra and is located on the NH 1a highway.
Dera Baba Band
Dera Baba Band is an ancient Gurdwara built over 300 years ago, Dera Baba Banda is nestled in the Reasi district of Katra and is devoted to Baba Banda Bahadur who was amongst the favorites of Guru Gobind Singh.
Best Time To Visit Katra
The best time to visit Katra is from March to October as the region is devoid of snow and the natural beauty is at its peak. The summer season at Vaishno Devi is from March to July. The weather in summer is cool and pleasant and most of the pilgrims visit the Vaishno Devi shrine during this period. The monsoon season at Vaishno Devi is from August to September. In monsoons, the region is medium to heavy rainfall and it is not advisable to go to the shrine as mudslides are common. However, natural beauty is at its best. The winter season at Vaishno Devi is from October to February. The weather in winter is characterized by sub-zero level temperature and snowfall is common. The harsh temperature makes the pilgrimage difficult, however, the shrine still sees pilgrims visiting the Holy Cave during the winters as well.
