Wayanad is a green paradise and is perched among mountains of the Western Ghats. In the east, the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is a lush, forested region with areas of high altitude, home to animals including Asiatic elephants, tigers, leopards, and egrets. In the Ambukuthi Hills to the south, Edakkal Caves contain ancient petroglyphs, some dating back to the Neolithic age. The town of Sultan Bathery is named after its nearby ancient Jain Temple, which was used as an ammunition battery, or armory, by Tipu Sultan’s army in the 18th century. Wayanad is also known for its trekking routes. The trail to its highest peak, Chembra, passes a heart-shaped lake en route to the summit. In the district’s western area, Banasura Sagar Dam, built of huge stones and boulders, has created a massive reservoir. Surrounded by hills, the reservoir is dotted with small islands. Nearby, a jungle trek leads to the powerful Meenmutty Waterfalls, where water cascades over three steep tiers of rock.
Banasura Sagar Dam
Banasura Sagar Dam, which impounds the Karamanathodu tributary of the Kabini River, is part of the Indian Banasura Sagar Project consisting of a dam and a canal project started in 1979. The goal of the project is to support the Kakkayam Hydroelectric power project and satisfy the demand for irrigation and drinking water in a region known to have water shortages in seasonal dry periods.
Edakkal Caves
Edakkal Caves are two natural caves at a remote location at Edakkal, 25 km from Kalpetta in the Wayanad district of Kerala in the Western Ghats.
Sentinel Rock Waterfalls
Sentinel Rock Waterfalls or Soochippara Falls is a three-tiered waterfall in Vellarimala, Wayanad. It is surrounded by deciduous, evergreen, and montane forests. The Sentinel Rock Waterfalls is 200 meters and offers a cliff face that is used for rock climbing.
Lakkidi
Lakkidi is the gateway of Wayanad district of Kerala state, south India. Lakkidi is one of the highest locations in Wayanad. It is situated 700 m above mean sea level, atop Thamarassery ghat pass. Vythiri is the nearest town, just 5 km from Lakkidi.
Pookode Lake
Pookode Lake is a scenic freshwater lake in the Wayanad district in Kerala, South India. A major tourist destination in the district, Pookode is a natural freshwater lake nestling amid evergreen forests.
Chembra Peak
Chembra Peak is one of the highest peaks in the Western Ghats and the highest peak in Wayanad hills, at 2,100 m above sea level. Chembra is located near the town of Meppadi and is 8 km south of Kalpetta.
Neelimala View Point
Neelimala View Point is a Mountain top viewing spot with hiking-trail access, views of waterfalls, rivers, and forested areas.
Meenmutty Waterfalls
Meenmutty Falls is located 29 km from Kalpetta in Wayanad District in the state of Kerala, India. It is a three-tiered waterfall with a height of 300 meters. Meenmutty is a combination of Malayalam words Meen and Mutty.
Phantom Rock
Phantom Rock is one of the tourist destinations close to Wayanad resort in Ambalavayal in the Wayanad district of Kerala. It is an archaeological structure found seen rarely in the world. This rock naturally resembles a skull, and thus it is known as Phantom Rock.
Bamboo Forests

Best Time To Visit Wayanad
Wayanad experiences tropical monsoons and hot summer. Thus the best time to visit Wayanad is between the months of August and May. The summer season begins with the coming of March and it ends in May. Summers are hot and humid in Wayanad as the temperature goes up to 37°C during the day. It is hard to beat the heat during this time which makes sightseeing almost impossible. However, evenings are pleasant as a gentle breeze blows through the place. In the evening, you can visit attractions such as Kuruwa Dweep, Meenmutty Falls, Pookot Lake, and Banasura Sagar Dam. In between June and September, Wayanad welcomes heavy rainfall. The rainfall further brings down the temperature to somewhere around 25°C. It is advised to avoid this season for a visit because of heavy rainfall and torrential winds. December brings in the winter season which lasts till February. The temperature during the season ranges between 18°C and 28°C. The days are calm and pleasant and the evenings are cold. It is the perfect season for sightseeing around the place.
