About Velankanni

Velankanni is a Special Grade Panchayat Town in Nagapattinam district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Once a port that traded with Rome and Greece, the tiny commercial center gradually lost its importance to the larger city of Nagapattinam. The canal built to link this town with Vedaranyam still lies to the west. The town is home to one of the most visited Roman Catholic Latin Rite shrines called the Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health.

Best Time To Visit Velankanni

The best season to visit Velankanni is between October and March. The summer months are hot and dry, and June to September is sultry, but moderate temperature prevails so short trips are advisable. The temperature soars during the summer in Velankanni and ranges around 28 °C to 38°C. Due to the cool breeze from the sea, the evenings are reasonably pleasant. Tourists are recommended to avoid the hot days of summer, especially between April and May. Mild to medium rainfall is what one can expect in the monsoon. The mild climate and pristine surroundings are the positives of visiting from June to September. The beach is more or less isolated during the rainy season, but a number of tourists still visit Velankanni in the monsoon season. A pleasant climate can be expected in this time period. Temperatures range from 21°C to 30°C from December to February. The Christmas season sees large crowds throng to Velankanni, and it’s a special time to visit the holy town as Church festivities are in full swing.
