About Galway
Galway, a harbor city on Ireland’s west coast, sits where the River Corrib meets the Atlantic Ocean. The city’s hub is 18th-century Eyre Square, a popular meeting spot surrounded by shops and traditional pubs that often offer live Irish folk music. Nearby, stone-clad cafes, boutiques, and art galleries line the winding lanes of the Latin Quarter, which retains portions of the medieval city walls. Christopher Columbus allegedly once prayed at 14th-century St. Nicholas’ Collegiate Church, a 16th-century townhouse Lynch’s Castle is now a bank. Galway has a thriving arts scene, with the Galway International Arts Festival in July, and places such as the Galway Arts Centre and Druid Theatre Company presenting exhibitions and performances year-round. Fresh local oysters, mussels, and other seafood are staples on many restaurant menus. Day trips to the Aran Islands often take in the Dún Aonghasa prehistoric fort on the Inishmore. To the south around Galway Bay is Dunguaire Castle, a 16th-century fortress.
Spanish Arch
The Spanish Arch and the Caoċ Arch in Galway are two remaining arches on the Ceann a Bhalla. The Spanish Arch was built in 1584 but is an extension of the 12th century Norman -built town wall, which stretched from Martin’s Tower to the riverbank. The Spanish Arch housed the Galway City Museum, which has now moved to a new location 50 yards away behind the original museum building.
Cathedral of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven and St Nicholas
The Cathedral of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven and St Nicholas, commonly known as Galway Cathedral, is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Galway and one of the largest and most impressive buildings in the city. Providing a full side view to those crossing a bridge over the Corrib, it was the last major stone church to be built in Ireland, at a time when concrete was already well established as the main medium of construction.
Eyre Square
Eyre Square is an inner-city public park in Galway, Ireland. The park is within the city center, adjoining the nearby shopping area of William Street and Shop Street. Galway railway station is adjacent to Eyre Square. The park is rectangular, surrounded on three sides by streets that form the major traffic arteries into Galway city centre. It remains a popular gathering place for visitors and natives alike and the grass areas are often packed on sunny days.
Lynch Memorial Window
Lynch Memorial Window is located right at the edge of the St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church graveyard. It is said that in 1493, the mayor and magistrate of Galway James Lynch FitzStephen, hanged his own son from the window of his home. The memorial is now embedded in stone above a Gothic doorway on Market Street near the graveyard at St. Nicholas’s Church.
Dunguaire Castle
Dunguaire Castle is a 16th-century tower house on the southeastern shore of Galway Bay in County Galway. The name derives from the Dun of King Guaire, the legendary king of Connacht. The castle's 75-foot tower and its defensive wall have been restored, and the grounds are open to tourists during the summer. Dunguaire Castle was used in the 1969 Walt Disney movie Guns in the Heather, featuring Kurt Russell, in which the castle was featured as Boyne Castle.

Hall of the Red Earl
The Hall of the Red Earl, a fascinating medieval archaeological site in the heart of Galway is now one of the city’s top visitor attractions. It is a major excavation that took place on-site with over 11,000 artefacts being uncovered. The discovery of the Red Earl’s Hall led to the proposed extension to the Revenue Commissioners offices being completely redesigned to allow for the preservation of the archaeological site.
Galway Arts Centre
Galway Arts Centre is a 3,000 sq ft space showcasing both Irish and international contemporary art. It is a well-known hive for cultural activity also hosts a wide range of activities such as classes in art, writing, and photography, and workshops in drama, music, and voice.
Barna Woods
Barna Woods is an area of mixed broadleaf woodland located in Barna, County Galway. The Woods are accessible from Cappagh park which is located in Knocknacara or from Barna Road where there is a small carpark. Other sections of the Woods include an area across the road known as the South Wood which leads to marshlands ending in the Silver Strand on Galway Bay.
Oranmore Castle
Oranmore Castle is a castle in Oranmore, County Galway. The castle, a rectangular tower house has four stories, a square staircase turret, and gun loops on the bottom floor. The castle was featured in the episode of Scariest Places on Earth.
